CUTTLE  BROOK  LOCAL NATURE  RESERVE

REDWING

Redwings are members of the thrush family who breed and spend their summers

in the far north, from Scandinavia to Siberia. Each autumn they migrate south and

pour across Britain in huge flocks, seeking food and better weather as winter sets in.

They can often be heard flying at night when their tseeeip calls give them away. From November on, large groups can be seen feeding on berry trees such as holly, hawthorn,

whitebeams and cotoneasters, or prospecting in rough fields for insects and worms.

They are regular visitors to the Cuttle Brook Reserve and can readily be identified by their reddish under-wing patches. Watch out for them later this autumn!
