CUTTLE
BROOK LOCAL NATURE RESERVE KINGFISHER |
|
A brief flash
of jewel-like colour over water, a tiny kingfisher skims the Cuttle Brook so
fast it is difficult to see but for a second or so. They regularly patrol
open stretches of the brook, searching for fish to catch. Most small
birds have to hunt constantly for food as they need to eat frequently
throughout the day. Kingfishers have devised a strategy for saving energy by
watching intently from a vantage point and catching larger prey less
frequently. They feed primarily on
fish (minnows & sticklebacks) but will also eat insects, worms and
crustaceans. |
